Bitcoin Whales Hold Back as Retail Deposits Hit 6-Month High - BeInCrypto
Retail investors have nearly doubled their Bitcoin deposits to Binance since April, reaching a six-month high, while Bitcoin whales have moved in the opposite direction for almost two months.
Data from CryptoQuant shows retail deposits at Binance have climbed from $5.5 billion in April to $10.75 billion, reaching a six-month high. This represents a significant increase in retail activity, with retail deposits now standing at 2.8 times whale deposits.
The divergence between retail and whale behavior continues as large holders have reduced their deposits to Binance by 36% since late August, from $5.9 billion to $3.8 billion. While this is a slowdown rather than a complete halt, it indicates whales are not rushing to distribute their holdings at current price levels.
Retail Exit Strategy?
The pattern of increased retail deposits suggests small holders may be using the current price rebound as an opportunity to exit positions at better prices. However, this interpretation remains an inference from flow data rather than confirmed selling activity.
Retail Inflows hit a 6-Month high as bitcoin:native holds $80K BTC flow analysis shows that whales and retail investors are behaving in radically opposite ways right now.
Market Test Ahead
The current market setup creates a test of who will supply coins to exchanges during a potential price rebound. If prices continue rising and whale deposits remain low, retail investors could become the main source of selling on Binance. Conversely, if whales return to depositing coins, the rebound might face selling pressure from both groups.
This divergence follows earlier on-chain readings showing whales accumulating balances before the October US inflation report, which caused Bitcoin to drop 3.3% in 24 hours. Despite this price movement, whale deposits have not increased since the report.
