Serbia's Vucic concedes defeat in historic snap election with record turnout
Serbia's Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in an historic election on Sunday following a near to 70% turnout at polling stations – the highest since the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1992.
The snap election was called in response to sustained protests that began after the tragic collapse of a train station canopy in Novi Sad in 2024, which resulted in 16 fatalities. These demonstrations have been led primarily by students and have focused on addressing corruption and perceived authoritarianism in the government.
Historic Turnout
Sunday's election saw record participation, with approximately 70% of eligible voters casting their ballots – the highest turnout Serbia has experienced since the country's break-up from Yugoslavia in 1992. This massive participation reflects the significant public interest and desire for change in the political landscape.
