AMD has submitted Linux kernel patches for an official Ryzen overclocking driver that will enable users to adjust CPU power limits and SMT settings.

Developed by AMD engineer Shyam Sundar S K, the driver provides an interface between Linux and the processor's firmware. Its first version allows users to adjust three parameters through the kernel's sysfs interface: Package Power Tracking (PPT), Thermal Design Current (TDC) and Electrical Design Current (EDC). These control the CPU's power consumption and current limits.

The driver also adds a way to enable or disable Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) through the system firmware. Unlike Linux's existing "nosmt" option, which simply prevents the operating system from using additional CPU threads, the new control changes the setting at the firmware level.

Current Limitations

There are some significant limitations, though. Changes to PPT, TDC and EDC require a system reboot to take effect, and the driver exposes only a small portion of the tuning options available through AMD's firmware. It is therefore not yet a replacement for Ryzen Master, AMD's overclocking utility for Windows.

Future Development

AMD has not announced plans to bring its overclocking utility to Linux. However, the new driver could give independent developers the building blocks needed to create their own command-line tools or graphical interfaces for CPU tuning. That would make adjusting power limits more convenient for Linux users who currently have to rely on BIOS settings or community-developed utilities.

For now, the patches have been submitted for review, but their inclusion in a mainline Linux kernel release has not been confirmed. The driver is still at an early stage, yet it marks a step toward official AMD-supported Ryzen tuning on Linux.
