New Wayland Protocol Proposed For VNC/Remote Software
Prominent Wayland developer Simon Ser has submitted a merge request for the new ext-transient-output protocol, designed to help remoting software like VNC servers function in a Wayland environment.
The new protocol is similar to ext-transient-seat but specifically designed for Wayland outputs (wl_output). While ext-transient-seat enables the creation of independent seats for remote desktop applications, ext-transient-output will handle dynamic output support. This allows virtual outputs to be captured via ext-image-copy-capture and displayed by remote clients.
Protocol Details
The merge request outlines how the transient output protocol "can be used by privileged clients to create independent virtual outputs that will be removed from the compositor when the client destroys the object." These virtual outputs are not tied to specific hardware devices, making them ideal for remoting scenarios.

Current Implementation
An experimental implementation of ext-transient-output has already been developed for the wlroots compositor library through a draft merge request. This development represents a significant step toward improving remote desktop functionality in Wayland environments, which have traditionally faced challenges with output handling.
