Jailbroken PS5s can now run Steam PC games
Gamers with jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now sign in with a Steam account and install games from their library directly to the console, a new project allows.
The new game launcher, called Playden for PS5, is based on the Playden launcher designed for macOS and adapted for the PlayStation. It lets users sign in with their Steam account and install games from their library directly to the console. This project is available on GitHub and allows for the experimental play of favorite Steam titles on a jailbroken PlayStation 5.
When a game is launched through Playden for PS5, it sets up a private Windows environment. The game is then run through prospero-win, which is a PS5 port of Wine. This process builds a separate PS5 app created specifically for the installed game. As a result, the Steam title appears as a separate tile on the console’s home screen.
The project’s design ensures that each game’s files, settings, and crashes are isolated from the launcher and other games. A separate runtime kit handles the Wine for PS5, the required graphics drivers, the Windows environment, and a template app shell for the games. This architecture allows for a more stable and organized experience for users running PC titles on their PS5.
