SEC clears listing of Volatility Shares’ 3x Bitcoin and Ether ETFs
The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the listing of Volatility Shares' triple-leveraged Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, marking a first for US regulators.
On October 2, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved a rule change allowing the Cboe BZX Exchange to list six triple-leveraged exchange-traded products from Volatility Shares. Among these are the 3x Bitcoin ETF and 3x Ether ETF, which represent the first time a US regulator has approved crypto products with this level of leverage.
The approval, filed as Release 34-106577, permits the listing of these products but does not yet allow them to begin trading. Before either fund can be offered to investors, the SEC must declare their Form S-1 registration statements effective. The proposed tickers are BITH for the 3x Bitcoin ETF and ETHK for the 3x Ether ETF, though no launch dates have been announced.
How triple leverage works
Both funds aim to deliver three times the daily performance of their underlying futures benchmarks rather than holding spot Bitcoin or Ether directly. The legal structure places them under the Securities Act of 1933, not the Investment Company Act of 1940, allowing them to bypass the 1940 Act's leverage limits.
The key mechanism is daily rebalancing. Each evening, the funds adjust their positions to maintain 3x exposure for the next trading session. While this delivers amplified returns over short periods, it can lead to volatility decay over longer stretches, especially in choppy markets where prices swing without clear direction.
Market implications
For active traders, these ETFs would offer amplified crypto exposure through standard brokerage accounts without requiring derivatives trading capabilities. Volatility Shares already manages over $1.2 billion in assets through its existing 2x Bitcoin ETF (BITX), positioning the firm to expand its product line with these more aggressive options.
These are tools for people who plan to hold for hours or days, not years.
What happens next
The critical next step is the SEC review of the registration statements. With no timeline set for this process, the funds could remain in limbo for an unknown period. Additionally, the approval covers four other triple-leveraged products beyond Bitcoin and Ether, indicating Volatility Shares' broader strategy for the Cboe BZX Exchange.
Until the SEC declares the S-1 filings effective, the approved listing cannot be utilized. The market will be watching closely for developments on these registration statements, as their approval would mark a significant milestone for leveraged crypto products in the United States.
