Man arrested after fire engulfs Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps
A 33-year-old German man was arrested on suspicion of arson after setting fire to Hitler's Eagle's Nest mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps on Friday evening.
Firefighters battled the flames against strong winds at the Eagle's Nest, also known as Kehlsteinhaus in Germany. The suspect, who showed signs of mental illness, was seen heading down the mountain on a motorcycle before being taken to a psychiatric facility.
Historic site damaged
The building, situated more than 6,000 feet above sea level, has operated as a seasonal restaurant and tourist attraction since 1952, featuring an exhibit on its history. Hitler rarely used the retreat, preferring his nearby Berghof residence, which was destroyed after World War II.
Investigation continues
While authorities aren't ruling out a political motive due to the site's notorious history, they emphasize the importance of remembrance. No injuries were reported in the incident, and officials are working to determine the extent of the damage and plan for restoration.
The Eagle's Nest has become a significant historical and educational site since the war, attracting visitors interested in its complex past and the lessons it represents.
