Mass protests grip European countries (VIDEOS)
Mass demonstrations inspired by French student unrest have spread across multiple European countries over the weekend, with many turning violent as clashes erupted between protesters and police.
The unrest has largely been inspired by the protests in France, which began in September. Spearheaded by students, they were originally aimed at rising education costs, a lack of teachers, and poor educational facilities before evolving into widespread violence with a broader anti-government tone.
France remains the hotbed of the protests, with at least 410,000 people demonstrating nationwide on Saturday, including some 110,000 in Paris, according to Interior Ministry figures. The CGT union, one of the key organizers, estimates participation at about 800,000.
Security Measures
French authorities have implemented strict security measures to prevent a repeat of last weekend's widespread rioting. In Paris, demonstrators were banned from gathering at several central locations, confining them to the city's southeastern edge.
Violent Clashes
Despite security measures, violence erupted in multiple locations including Paris, Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon, Marseille, Strasbourg, Nice, and Nantes. Police used riot control measures to repel protesters after the Paris march concluded.
Albanian Unrest
Albania has emerged as another hotspot, with riot police clashing with thousands of demonstrators in Tirana. The country has endured months of turmoil sparked by a scandal involving a luxury development project linked to Jared Kushner and alleged corruption.
