Ukraine’s military says Starlink satellite connection stable after recent restrictions
Ukraine's military has a stable connection to Starlink satellite communications, 10 days after sudden restrictions hampered military operations.
The Starlink satellite terminals, produced by Elon Musk's SpaceX but managed by the US government, are crucial for Ukraine's military operations. Sudden speed restrictions that capped operations at 160km/h led to failed combat missions earlier this month. Ukraine's ability to intercept Russian attack drones was hampered, and some operations behind enemy lines were cancelled.
Political Blame Game
The restrictions coincided with Donald Trump's announcement of a US deal to buy Russian diesel. Trump initially denied his administration was behind cutting intelligence sharing with Ukraine, stating: "I don't know if it was anybody, but it wasn't me, and I don't think it was Elon." However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to shift suspicion to Musk, noting the president "doesn't run that company and can't direct that company to do anything."
Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately Potus [president of the United States].
Ukrainian Response
President Zelenskyy blamed both the US government and SpaceX, calling it "a planned operation" that would "bring a lot of human losses." He noted similar restrictions didn't apply to EU countries, suggesting targeted limitations. The restoration began overnight, with Zelenskyy thanking US allies for resolving the issue: The speeds are now at the level we need. Trump later claimed the service was running again at full speed, though a European official disputed this claim.
Future Uncertainty
When asked about potential future disruptions, Trump said he "might have to" speak to Musk, adding: "If there is a problem, I'll get it straightened out." He described Musk as "very brilliant" and "very good." The incident highlights Ukraine's continued dependence on US technological support for its defense against Russian attacks, particularly against jet-powered Shahed drones.
