Fire engulfs Hitler’s former Eagle’s Nest retreat in Germany
A fire engulfed Adolf Hitler's former Eagle's Nest retreat in southern Germany on Saturday, with police detaining a suspect as around 200 firefighters battled the blaze.
The Eagle's Nest, also known as the Kehlsteinhaus, sits atop the Obersalzberg mountain near Berchtesgaden. Webcam footage showed flames and smoke rising from the historic site, which has become a tourist attraction since World War II.
Firefighters faced challenges accessing the remote mountain location as they worked to contain the fire. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, though authorities have confirmed they have a suspect in custody.
After the war, it was converted into a restaurant and has since become a popular destination for visitors to the Berchtesgaden area.
