Task-view – review a coding agent’s change as a map instead of a diff

A new open-source tool called task-view helps developers review AI-generated code by presenting changes as interactive visual maps rather than flat diffs, making the process more intuitive and comprehensive.

When coding agents write most of the code, reviewing traditionally meant opening changed files one by one and mentally reconstructing how components connect. Task-view, a new open-source tool, transforms this process by presenting code changes as visual maps that show relationships, flows and context in a single browser page.

The tool works by having AI coding agents describe their changes—functions, components, tests touched, and their relationships—then converts this into a graph visualization. Each piece of code appears with its diff or final version alongside the agent's reasoning, while edges show how components connect.

Key Features

Task-view displays code changes through four interconnected views: Graph shows all components and their relationships; Flows illustrates user-visible paths through the code; Diff Map flags any changed lines the agent didn't describe; and Claims highlights statements reviewers might question with supporting evidence.

The diff shows lines; the structure of the change is left for you to work out. task-view puts that structure on the page for you.

A critical validation step checks every file, line and commit against Git, flagging discrepancies between the agent's description and actual changes. The tool reads only files and runs read-only Git commands, never executing tests or builds, ensuring safety during review.

Universal Compatibility

Unlike tools that parse specific languages, task-view works with any programming language by building maps from files, line ranges and diffs. It handles changes spanning multiple languages and repositories, such as a web client and its API, with syntax highlighting for approximately 300 languages.

The tool integrates with any coding agent that follows written instructions, including Claude Code and Codex. Installation requires only Git and works on macOS, Linux and Windows without administrator rights, with binaries automatically selected based on the system.

Workflow Integration

Developers can integrate task-view through three methods: as a pre-made skill for agents, as a context file, or as a one-off prompt. After installation, agents write a JSON description of their changes, which task-view validates and converts into an interactive HTML page stored locally.

The validation process iterates with the agent until all references match the actual codebase. Each task generates its own HTML file in a .review directory, allowing reviewers to examine changes without running code while maintaining a record of past reviews.
