Syrian migrant walked free after raping teen in Germany – media
A Syrian migrant arrested for raping a 16-year-old girl in Germany was released after 40 days in pre-trial detention and later accused of raping another woman.
The 26-year-old Syrian national, identified as Ahmad A., was initially apprehended in late February 2025 at a Munich asylum center for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl. However, the teenager's psychological condition prevented timely judicial questioning, leading authorities to release him in early April after 40 days in pre-trial detention.
Second alleged rape
In July 2025, while required to report to police twice weekly and barred from approaching his first victim, Ahmad A. allegedly lured a 29-year-old woman to a secluded location where he and two Yemeni nationals took turns raping her. Police arrested the suspects in September 2025.
Continued detention would have violated the 'principle of expedited proceedings in detention cases' and would have been 'no longer proportionate.'
Legal proceedings
Ahmad A. was convicted of raping the 16-year-old girl and sentenced to two and a half years in prison in November 2025. He maintains the sexual encounter with the 29-year-old was consensual, according to his lawyer. The trial over the second alleged rape is ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for October 27.
Broader context
The case has reignited debate over Germany's immigration policies. Under former Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-border policies, Germany accepted over a million migrants from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq in 2015, and has since granted temporary protection to an estimated 1.2 million Ukrainians.
Public discontent with the government's handling of illegal immigration has grown amid rising crime rates and migrant-perpetrated terrorist attacks. The opposition right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, advocating stricter immigration controls, now leads polls with 30% support, 12 percentage points ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's ruling CDU/CSU bloc.
