Aave changes USDT borrowing rules and loan costs suddenly jump
Aave has lowered the utilization threshold for Tether's USDT on its Ethereum Core market, causing borrowing rates to rise more sharply as pool liquidity tightens.
The change, implemented on October 21 in Ethereum block 26,241,799, means borrowers now face steeper rate increases once utilization exceeds 92%, down from the previous 94% threshold. This adjustment corresponds to approximately 57.8 million USDT more modeled unborrowed liquidity at the threshold, according to data from DeFi risk service provider LlamaRisk.
Under the new parameters, the borrowing rate at the kink stands at 4.5% APR, climbing to 14.5% at 100% utilization. For comparison, at a hypothetical 94% utilization, the previous curve charged 4.5% APR, while the new curve would charge 7% APR - a 2.5 percentage point difference that would amount to $25,000 in additional annual interest on a $1 million loan.
Rate Impact
Aave's two-slope model gradually increases borrowing rates up to an optimal utilization point, then more sharply beyond that. Lowering the kink moves the expensive portion of the curve earlier, making loans more costly sooner as pool utilization increases.
The trade-off for lenders is earlier pressure on borrowers to preserve withdrawal headroom. The intended cushion remains available to be borrowed or withdrawn.
Liquidity Dynamics
At 94% utilization, this would leave 173.53 million USDT unborrowed, while at 92% utilization, it would leave 231.38 million USDT unborrowed - a difference of 57.84 million USDT. The change creates additional withdrawal headroom without requiring new cash to be added to the system.
As of October 23, the reserve had about 2.9 billion USDT in outstanding supplier claims and 2.5 billion USDT in variable debt, with physical USDT held at the aToken contract standing at approximately 391.4 million.
