At least seven killed in ‘terror attack’ on church funeral in Jordan (VIDEOS)
At least seven people were killed and 34 wounded in a terrorist attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Jordan.
The attack occurred on Friday afternoon in the village of Hmoud in the western Karak Governorate, where a funeral ceremony was taking place at St. George’s Church. A group of at least three assailants arrived and opened fire on the mourners, with the shooting lasting approximately 15 minutes before the suspects drove away from the scene unhindered.
CCTV footage from the scene shows the attackers, two armed with handguns and one with an assault rifle, firing at people desperately trying to flee. The footage is highly graphic, showing the suspects repeatedly shooting wounded victims in the head as they lay on the ground.
Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya confirmed the attack and described the suspects as a "group of extremists" who are still at large. He stated that the incident was "painful and horrific" and "unparalleled in the history of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan."
Jordanian King Abdullah II has vowed to "confront the terrorist act that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties."
The massacre has prompted a major response from the authorities, with Hmoud flooded by assorted security forces and tightened security measures implemented in the city of Karak. The king visited the victims at a hospital later on Friday to show support and promised to punish the perpetrators.
