HSBC has debuted RedCoin (RCHKD), its first stablecoin, on the PayMe app, enabling over 3.3 million users to send money and pay at more than 100,000 merchants.

The Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin will be fully backed by high-quality liquid assets held in separate accounts, ensuring stability for users. PayMe customers can activate a stablecoin wallet in the app over the coming days, marking a significant step in mainstream adoption of digital currencies.

Regulatory Approval

The rollout follows Hong Kong Monetary Authority's decision in April to grant its first stablecoin issuer licenses to HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial, a Standard Chartered-led venture. Anchorpoint began a limited rollout of its HKDAP token in August, focusing on institutional payments and settlement.

Future Expansion

HSBC plans to add a RedCoin wallet to its Hong Kong mobile banking app later this year, with customers eventually able to use the token to subscribe to tokenized investment products, including a new share class of its existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund.

We will soon add more products, including expanding into wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.

Market Impact

Industry experts believe integrating stablecoins into existing payment platforms removes barriers to adoption. Vincent Chok, CEO of FDUSD issuer First Digital, emphasized that everyday exposure builds familiarity and confidence in stablecoins across the wider market.
