Father shoots carjackers, killing one, when they try to hijack his vehicle while travelling with his children in South Africa
A father in South Africa fatally shot one of two alleged carjackers who tried to hijack his vehicle while his children were inside.
Dash cam footage captured the moment an unnamed father in Durban, South Africa, was forced to shoot at two alleged carjackers who tried to hijack his vehicle while his children were inside.
The father was speaking and laughing with his young daughter in the passenger seat when a white vehicle pulled up ahead of him and two men ran out, opening fire.
One of the men ran towards the father's son, who was standing by the gate, and the father immediately drew his own gun, firing at least 26 bullets at the men.
The daughter cowered in her seat as the father used his body to protect her, and after the shoot-out, her brother helped her out of the car.
During the exchange, the father's car rolled forward and crashed into a tree, smashing the windscreen.
Police investigation
Pinetown police have opened three cases into attempted murder, attempted carjacking, and an inquest following the shooting.
The suspects opened fire, and the victim retaliated, fatally wounding one of the suspects. The remaining suspects fled the scene in their vehicle.
Vehicle hijacking is a violent crime where armed robbers catch drivers off-guard and threaten them with violence to steal the car.
In South Africa, hijackings have increased in recent years and are often organised as a business, with stolen vehicles smuggled out of the country.
