Andreessen Horowitz is rebranding its a16z Crypto fund to a16z Frontier, expanding its focus to include artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

The Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm announced the rebranding in a blog post published on Thursday. The renamed fund will target startups developing technologies and markets that may require years to mature, according to general partner Chris Dixon.

Despite the name change, a16z emphasized it is not abandoning crypto. Dixon confirmed the firm will continue investing in crypto companies and advocating for sensible crypto regulation.

Blockchain mainstreaming

Dixon argued that the crypto label has become less meaningful as blockchains have become commonplace in mainstream finance. Wall Street and fintech companies now regularly launch products built on blockchains, making the distinction between crypto and non-crypto companies less useful.

This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation.

New investment focus

The a16z Frontier fund will now consider products built on artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, and networks connecting people with AI agents. Dixon sees continued potential for blockchains in facilitating payments and trades between AI agents.

Dixon will lead the fund alongside founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, as well as general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.

Industry trend

a16z's move follows a pattern established by other crypto venture capital firms. Paradigm raised $1.2 billion in July for AI and robotics investments, while Framework Ventures secured $400 million in June to expand into AI, energy, fintech and tokenization. Haun Ventures similarly shifted focus with a $1 billion raise in May.

The firm has backed some of crypto's biggest names, including early investments in Coinbase, Solana (SOL), and Uniswap (UNI). With the rebranding, the same crypto team will now also evaluate pitches from AI founders.
