Airbnb scraps guest checkout chores such as cleaning
Airbnb has announced new rules prohibiting hosts from asking guests to perform significant chores like stripping beds or washing dishes during checkout.
Under the new rules, hosts should only make "reasonable" requests of guests. The platform stated that guests should not be asked to complete tasks that require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner.
Guest complaints
Checkout chores have been a contentious issue for guests, especially when they are also charged cleaning fees. Airbnb has previously admitted that such fees can create confusion between guests and hosts.
Remaining expectations
Guests will still be expected to leave dirty dishes in the sink, gather used towels, and separate trash and recyclables. Hosts can also require guests to put trash in animal-proof containers in bear-active areas or limit shower time due to drought restrictions.
Policy context
The new rules come amid growing protests against housing shortages in European cities, with protesters blaming short-term rentals for pushing residents out. In September, the European Commission proposed more restrictions on Airbnb and similar companies in tourist hubs.
