Japanese game developer Capcom has confirmed a cyber security incident that compromised the email addresses of over 11 million customers worldwide.

The developer of the Street Fighter series disclosed in an October 22 notice that certain customer information associated with CAPCOM ID was subject to unauthorized access by a third party. The company has confirmed that 11,774,247 email addresses were impacted, alongside system-specific data such as account creation dates, last login times, and client IP addresses.

A smaller number of records also exposed date of birth, gender, country/region, and nickname information. Capcom discovered that passwords had been changed without authorization on 196 accounts, though the company has not confirmed compromise of originally set passwords.

Investigation Response

Capcom detected suspicious activity on October 19, immediately blocked unauthorized access, and began investigating. By October 20, the company had established an incident response headquarters and confirmed customer information had been accessed. Capcom informed authorities including the Osaka Prefectural Police and Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission on October 21.

Capcom has not confirmed any compromise of CAPCOM ID account login passwords originally set by customers themselves. However, the company has confirmed that passwords were changed without authorisation on 196 accounts.

Customer Warning

While Capcom stated that email addresses associated with CAPCOM ID could continue to be used, the company warned customers about potential misuse of the exposed information. The developer specifically mentioned the possibility of fraudulent emails or communications impersonating Capcom or related parties.

Customers have been advised to exercise caution with suspicious emails, refrain from accessing unknown URLs, and avoid opening unexpected attachments. Cyber Daily reports that Australian customers began receiving breach notifications as of Friday morning. Capcom has completed emergency response measures and is in the process of notifying all affected customers.
