Lewis Hamilton aims to extend career till early 2030s so he can race in African Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton aims to continue racing in Formula One until the early 2030s to compete in the African Grand Prix set to take place in Rwanda.
Lewis Hamilton has revealed he hopes to extend his Formula One career into the early 2030s specifically to compete in the African Grand Prix in Rwanda. The seven-time world champion expressed his excitement about the race, which is scheduled to take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, 25 miles south of Kigali, marking Formula One's return to the African continent since 1993.
Career Extension Plans
At 41 years old, Hamilton is currently contracted with Ferrari until the end of the 2027 season. Speaking before the US Grand Prix, he indicated his desire to continue racing for at least another four years to make it to the Rwandan event. If successful, Hamilton would be in his mid-40s when racing in Africa, potentially challenging F1's current oldest driver, 45-year-old Fernando Alonso.
Controversial Location
The announcement of Rwanda hosting a Formula One race has drawn criticism due to the country's human rights record. Critics have labeled the 10-year agreement as an act of sportswashing, with Amnesty UK's head of campaigns Felix Jakens stating it's a prize for Rwandan authorities to polish their image while deflecting from human rights concerns.
Despite the controversy, Hamilton remains optimistic about the race's potential impact. He believes the event could serve as a force for good in Africa and calls for greater education about the continent, acknowledging that many problems stem from colonialism and Western intervention.
Economic Ambitions
The Rwandan government and Rwanda Development Board are backing the new race as part of broader efforts to develop the venue as a destination for motorsport and economic growth. The country has recently invested heavily in hosting various sporting events, including cycling's road world championships, cricket's Women's Challenge Trophy, the 2023 Fifa congress, and the Basketball Africa League.
Hamilton sees the race as an opportunity to spark conversation and interest in Africa. He hopes the event will encourage people to educate themselves about the continent's history and current issues, while also advocating for peace in various regions including Congo, Sudan, Syria, and Palestine.
