Man Hires Swarm of AI Agents to Go on Epic Hacking Spree Against Major Companies - Futurism

A cybersecurity researcher at NorForge discovered that a Chinese-speaking hacker had used autonomous agents to carry out a mass hacking spree against global companies. The attacks impacted more than 100 organizations, with successful breaches occurring after AI agents targeted different companies for approximately 23 hours.

AI Tool Abuse

The hacker is one of several malicious actors abusing an open-source AI tool called Cairn to send swarms of agents on autonomous hacking missions. One attacker successfully obtained sensitive credit card information, while the Chinese-speaking hacker was particularly aggressive, targeting over 1,200 e-commerce sites in the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

Corporate Responses

John Deere confirmed it took "necessary remediation actions" after the breach, stating there was no indication that sensitive information was accessed. SharkNinja revealed the hacker accessed a non-sensitive site, while Cummins reported investigating a potential attack on a third-party vendor's website.

Each successful hack reportedly cost about $50 in tokens, with Fagerland noting the techniques used were sophisticated. It's not straightforward to come up with solutions like that, he told Reuters. "It's not script kiddie stuff."
