Modular has fully opened the source code for its MAX software, including the graph compiler, runtime, and device extensibility hooks, under a new MAX license that allows commercial use with some restrictions.

This latest development comes after Modular's Mojo language was open-sourced following the company's acquisition by Chris Lattner. The MAX software release is part of version 26.7 and marks a significant step in the company's approach to open development.

New License Terms

Modular is promoting MAX as "source available" rather than traditional open-source due to the new MAX license. While it allows building and distributing commercial products without fees or royalties, the license restricts certain uses including AI-assisted re-implementations, commercial hosted inference services, and publication of modified source code.

Our intent is to encourage experimentation and innovation while ensuring that MAX continues to evolve as a unified software foundation. Developers are free to modify and experiment with MAX, and we want to make it as easy as possible to contribute improvements back to the project.

MAX Software Overview

MAX is a high-performance inference server with OpenAI-compatible endpoints for large language models (LLMs). The opening of its source code provides developers with greater access to the technology while maintaining certain restrictions to prevent fragmentation.
