Archaeologists in Hungary have unearthed a Soviet Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter plane buried about 17 feet underground in the village of Törtel, along with personal items of its pilot.

The discovery was made in central Hungary, approximately 50 miles southeast of Budapest. Museum officials confirmed that several portions of the aircraft were relatively intact when recovered, including a piece of the red star insignia that was "in relatively good condition."

Among the recovered items was part of the aircraft's fuselage displaying the jet's side number, along with personal belongings of the pilot. These included a book containing the pilot's signature, which experts at the museum are currently working to restore.

Historical Context

Although scientists and archaeologists continue to study the decades-old debris, they have traced the wreckage to a specific wartime crash that occurred in November 1944. According to Hungary Today, the aircraft was shot down during an aerial duel between German Lt. Peter Düttmann and Soviet Lt. Alexander Semyonovich Andrianov.

Although Andrianov escaped by parachute, he later became a prisoner of war.

Future Plans

The Hungarian Museum of Military History announced that the best-preserved pieces of the wreck will be exhibited once its archaeology department completes restoration procedures and documents their observations.
