British lawmakers have identified "glaring gaps" in the United Kingdom's Arctic defenses, leaving both the UK and NATO vulnerable to potential Russian attacks in the region.

Published Thursday, the parliamentary report warns that the UK's "shockingly low availability" of Royal Navy submarines and warships has left critical infrastructure, including underwater cables and energy supplies, exposed to potential Russian attacks. The committee emphasized that Russia is using the Arctic ice to conceal and protect its submarines while threatening NATO sea lanes and the UK's nuclear deterrent.

Growing Russian Threat

The report highlights that Russia is seeking to dominate the Arctic for military advantage. "This is a demanding, hostile environment, and one that our greatest adversary, Russia, is seeking to dominate for military advantage," wrote Tan Dhesi, Chair of the Commons Defense Committee.

Russia can then use the ice to conceal and protect its own submarines while threatening NATO sea lanes, U.K. critical infrastructure and the U.K.'s nuclear deterrent.

Call for Action

The committee urged the British government to "urgently address" gaps in maritime forces, particularly with the U.S. acting "more unilaterally in the region." They also called on Canada and European NATO allies to "take more responsibility for defence of their interests in the High North." The UK lacks critical military capabilities that it has relied on the U.S. to provide, such as ballistic missile defense and long-range strike assets.

Former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer warned in June that Russia could attack NATO countries by the end of the decade. Conservative shadow minister Stuart Anderson emphasized the urgency: "To deter war we must be ready for it, that means spending money now, not kicking the can down the road until it's too late." The report stresses that the UK must address these gaps by 2030 to deter and defeat any potential aggression in the High North.
