Pepe (PEPE), Uniswap (UNI), Ethena (ENA) and Others: Whales Are Buying Smaller Altcoins, but Why?
A single whale purchased approximately $7.22 million worth of tokens across nine different cryptocurrencies over the past 24 hours, focusing primarily on smaller and mid-sized digital assets.
The largest purchases included 378,129 LIT tokens worth $1.4 million, 6.61 million ENA tokens valued at $1.34 million, and 3 million ONDO tokens also worth $1.34 million. The remaining funds were distributed among AERO ($948,000), ETH ($591,000), QNT ($589,000), UNI ($443,000), TAO ($368,000), and PEPE ($195,000).
Market Performance
Among the purchased tokens, only LIT has shown positive movement, trading near $3.69 and up approximately 7% on the day. The whale paid roughly $3.70 per token, indicating a purchase at current prices. In contrast, ENA is under pressure, trading near $0.199 and down 2.5% in the last day, significantly below its recent high of $0.2437 just a week prior.
ONDO is also slightly lower, trading near $0.435 and down more than 4% on the day. AERO has experienced the most significant decline among the major purchases, trading near $0.807 and approximately 4.6% lower than when purchased. ETH has been the steadiest performer in the group, trading around $2,428 and down just 1%.
Investment Strategy
The whale's focus on smaller and mid-sized tokens rather than Bitcoin or large cryptocurrencies suggests a strategy seeking bigger upside potential. Several factors may explain this approach: many of these tokens are trading far below their previous highs, making them appear attractive to large buyers.
The selected tokens also have clear narratives connecting them to emerging sectors. ENA and ONDO are linked to stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets, while UNI and AERO represent major trading platforms, and TAO is associated with artificial intelligence developments.
Buying during red days is a common whale habit. Most of these tokens were falling while the purchases were made, which points to buying the dip rather than chasing a rally.
Market Caution
Despite the significant investment, market analysts caution that a single whale's activity doesn't guarantee price increases. Smaller altcoins tend to experience more dramatic price movements in both directions compared to established cryptocurrencies. The whale could potentially reverse positions just as quickly as they established them.
Traders will likely monitor whether this particular wallet continues adding to its positions and whether ENA, AERO, and ONDO can halt their recent downward trends. The outcome of these positions may provide insight into whether this represents a strategic accumulation or a temporary market fluctuation.
