Market analyst Jesse Eckel argues Bitcoin's scarcity gives it a major advantage over gold, as scientists make progress toward artificially producing the precious metal.

Market analyst Jesse Eckel has highlighted a potential advantage for Bitcoin over gold as technological advances threaten to undermine the precious metal's scarcity. In an October 21 post on X, Eckel pointed out that while scientists make progress toward artificially producing gold, Bitcoin's supply remains mathematically constrained.

Gold breakthrough claims

Eckel's comments came in response to an announcement from San Francisco-based startup Marathon Fusion, which claimed to have achieved a breakthrough in transforming mercury into real gold. The company stated it had demonstrated "high-rate alchemy," beating CERN's record by a factor of 10.

Marathon Fusion also claimed to have developed a plasma centrifuge capable of enriching isotopes, outperforming a Soviet-era record that had stood for four decades. The startup is now working on building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.

In 2025, Marathon Fusion outlined a process that could theoretically produce approximately 5,000 kilograms of gold annually from a gigawatt-scale fusion power plant, using high-energy neutrons to convert a specific mercury isotope into gold through nuclear transmutation.

Bitcoin's scarcity advantage

The company's gold-production ambitions have attracted considerable attention, though commercially viable mass production remains a distant prospect. Eckel's argument touches on one of Bitcoin's central investment narratives: its predictable scarcity.

Unlike gold, whose total supply can increase through mining discoveries and potentially nuclear transmutation, Bitcoin has a maximum supply of approximately 21 million coins. The cryptocurrency's issuance follows a predetermined schedule, with mining rewards declining by half approximately every four years.

Any attempt to increase Bitcoin's supply beyond the established limit would require a change to the network's consensus rules, making its scarcity fundamentally different from gold's as artificial production methods advance.
