France bans protests in parts of Paris as Macron slams Trump
Paris police banned protests in several key areas including the Elysee palace and Champs-Elysees as France braces for more demonstrations following violent unrest last weekend.
The curfew applies between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. local time, covering the presidential palace, Bastille Square, parliament buildings, and tourist sites like the Louvre. Authorities have sought to reassure the public after violent unrest swept the country last weekend.
The crisis began with students protesting high prices and demanding education reform but escalated when masked rioters looted shops and clashed with police. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez admitted authorities 'lost control' and failed to anticipate the violence.
Political Blame Game
US President Donald Trump attributed the unrest to 'migrants, jihadists, and communists,' claiming they had 'conquered, looted, and burned France to the ground.' Trump said he had warned Macron about immigration but the French president refused to close borders.
There are people who campaign at France's expense — leaders who are in campaign mode, whether here in the region or on the other side of the Atlantic.
Image Manipulation Claims
Macron, visiting Qatar, claimed information about the crisis has been manipulated, including 'AI-generated images depicting scenes that never actually happened.' He called comments from foreign leaders 'as unacceptable as they are stupid.'
Macron's far-right rival Marine Le Pen dismissed his account as 'conspiratorial,' saying the images showed 'the sad reality of what France has become after 10 years of Macronist rule.' Le Pen is currently the favorite to win the 2027 presidential election.
