OpenAI adds real-time collaboration to ChatGPT Slides
OpenAI has introduced real-time collaborative editing and commenting features to ChatGPT Slides, available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers.
The rollout began on October 16, 2026, and is integrated within Space, OpenAI's collaborative workspace feature introduced in late September 2026 at its DevDay event. This enhancement allows several teammates to work on a single presentation simultaneously, making changes in real-time.
The update also includes shared commenting functionality, enabling colleagues to leave notes directly on a deck rather than scattering feedback across multiple channels. Users can modify text, images, shapes, and charts within slides without repeatedly prompting the AI.
Market Competition
By adding multi-user editing and comments, OpenAI is addressing the feature set that makes office software sticky and is moving into territory traditionally dominated by Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. The export options to PowerPoint, PDF, and Google Slides indicate OpenAI aims to complement rather than replace existing tools.
A notable limitation at launch is the absence of comment-only access, with collaborators only receiving view or full edit permissions. The feature arrives approximately two months after OpenAI's acquisition of NextSlide on August 9, 2026, which aimed to strengthen presentation capabilities within ChatGPT.
Future Developments
Key areas to watch include potential implementation of comment-only permissions, expansion of access beyond Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers, and further evolution of Space as a comprehensive productivity environment. Both Microsoft and Google have been integrating AI into their own productivity suites, intensifying competition in this space.
