China Unveils 13-Foot Robot, Elon Musk Teases Real-Life Optimus Prime
A Chinese robotics startup unveiled a 13-foot humanoid robot at the 2026 China International Industry Fair, prompting Tesla CEO Elon Musk to joke that his Optimus will one day build Optimus Prime.
The machine, called Neo1, is a 'super humanoid' developed by Beijing startup NeodraDynamics. It stands about 4 meters tall and weighs roughly 1.2 tons, making it more than twice the height of Musk’s Optimus.
Neo1’s two arms can jointly carry 500 kilograms, or about 1,100 pounds. Most of its 41 joints run on small hydraulic actuators instead of electric motors.
The company pitches Neo1 for port handling, mining, and disaster rescue, with nuclear and deep-sea maintenance listed as future uses.
Musk’s Optimus vs. Chinese Giants
Optimus is a human-sized robot built for factory and household tasks. Neo1, in contrast, gives up flexibility for raw strength.
Optimus will build Optimus Prime.
A user asked Musk for a real-life Evangelion, the Japanese anime about giant piloted robots. Musk replied with the joke above.
Wall Street still ties much of Tesla’s value to Musk’s Optimus bet. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives expects robotaxis and Optimus to make 2027 a strong year.
Competitors and Predictions
Not everyone agrees that humanoid robots will succeed. Billionaire investor Mark Cuban recently predicted that humanoid robots will fail within a decade.
Chinese rivals are also moving fast. Unitree’s founder expects robots to reach their own ChatGPT moment within two to 10 years.
For now, the Musk Optimus Prime post is a joke. Still, giant Chinese prototypes and Tesla’s human-sized bet show that the humanoid race has no clear winner yet.
