MSCI To Move Forward With Proposal That Could Exclude Strategy From Index
MSCI will implement a proposal that could remove bitcoin-heavy Strategy from its global equity benchmarks starting November 30, 2026.
The index maker announced Thursday it "will implement the proposal to define and classify non-operating companies as ineligible for inclusion in the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes." The changes will take effect with the November 2026 Index Review, effective at the close of November 30, 2026.
Bitcoin Treasury
Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, is an enterprise software company that shifted to buying and holding bitcoin in 2020. It has since become the largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency, with 848,250 bitcoins worth approximately $69.2 billion at current prices.
Bitcoin doesn't need MSCI. Neither does Strategy.
Market Impact
While MSCI's decision won't immediately remove Strategy from its indices, future tests could lead to its exclusion. If removed, fewer institutional investors would be able to hold the stock. The company's Nasdaq-listed shares were trading over 6% lower on Friday following the announcement.
